True Coffee Geeks

Head into a branch of Starbucks and you can bet your last penny that at least half of the folks in there would call themselves coffee geeks. Well, here’s a reality check for you – they’re not…and not even close at that. Right now, the UK is knee-deep in its biggest ever love affair with coffee which has led to vast swathes of the population believing they’re full-blown coffee geeks, just because they’ve made the switch away from instant.

If you ask us however, there’s a huge difference between a coffee fan and a genuine coffee geek – just as there’s another clear divide between coffee geek and coffee snob. Here at Smokey Barn Roasters, we’d happily position ourselves right slap-bang in the middle of the geek brigade for the simple reason that quality coffee isn’t just our job, it’s our life and our passion!

Coffee Fan Vs Coffee Geek

Of course, you’ll now be asking exactly what makes the difference between a coffee fan and a real geeky type…so we’ll do our best to explain. The long and short of it comes down to the intensiveness with which you indulge your coffee obsession, which in our case is intensive to say the least. A coffee fan may pick up a few new roasts from time to time – we scour the whole world. Coffee fans will generally stick with the coffee beans and grounds they like, we like to stray as far as the weird and wholly wonderful. And while a coffee fan might prefer to gulp down generic coffee from a huge international chain, coffee geeks tend to favour those grimy and unheard-of cafes that tend to be no bigger than a coffin.

As far as we’re concerned, in order to do a good job in the industry there’s really no room for anyone but the bona-fide coffee geek. Suffice to say however, about 99% of those currently leading the UK’s coffee industry are nothing of the sort, having only gone into business to capitalise on the growing demand for speciality coffee – not for the love of coffee and the people who love it. It takes a real coffee geek to start a roasting house right from the very shed in the back garden – Smokey Barn Roasters fitting the description to a tee!

No Coffee Snobs, Please!

As mentioned earlier, there’s a big and important difference between a real coffee geek and a coffee snob…the latter being a group we don’t like to be associated with. The way we see it, high quality coffee is all about enjoyment and nothing else – there’s no excuse for ever looking down your nose at the way others do their thing, even if you’re convinced they’re getting it wrong. We select gourmet coffee beans in accordance with quality and demand, but would never suggest for one minute that they’re to everyone’s tastes…and why should they be?

So, if you’ve been wondering whether you might have crossed the line into coffee snobbery, consider the following checklist:

  1. Are you more bothered about what those around you are drinking than what’s in your own cup?
  2. Have you ever pretended to like a super premium coffee even though you hated it?
  3. Have you bought a super expensive coffee machine but secretly prefer to use your pod machine?
  4. Do you naturally assume that expensive coffee is superior and adjust your buying decisions accordingly?
  5. Do you get caught up in weird coffee fads (butter for example) just to make sure you’re ‘on the pulse’ even though it’s clearly barmy?
  6. Have you ever rolled your eyes at an innocent bystander for adding syrup or the ‘wrong’ milk to their coffee?

We see coffee as a very much ‘live and let live’ pleasure and to those who say there’s a right and wrong way of enjoying java, we say get real! We went into business to bring the world’s finest gourmet grinds and beans to the people of the UK, but this doesn’t mean we assume everyone not buying our stuff is wrong. Different strokes for different folks and all that – whatever makes you happy!
