If you happen to be heading off to the United States anytime soon, you probably already have your sights set on some of the most incredible coffees on Earth. However, there’s one particular brand that even the country’s primary public health department is warning pretty much everyone to stay away from.

We’re all used to turn to coffee to help us get up and get active in the morning. As far as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned however, Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee might be helping people do the same in a very, VERY different way. And just for the record, it’s apparently not a good thing…nothing of the sort.

Here’s the official statement released this week by the FDA:

“The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to purchase or use Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee, a product promoted for improving energy. This product was identified by FDA during an examination of international mail shipments.”

“FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee contains desmethyl carbodenafil. Desmethyl carbodenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, an FDA-approved prescription drug for erectile dysfunction (ED).”

“This undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.”

Now, given the slogan touted by the folks behind the stuff – ‘The Relationship Saver’ – it’s not exactly surprising to learn of Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee’s additional properties. Nevertheless, given the fact that Viagra and other products containing the active ingredient sildenafil are considered to be prescription medications to be used under advisement only, it all adds up to a slightly scary prospect. Desmethyl carbodenafil and sildenafil might not be the same thing exactly, but they’re similar enough to have the FDA quite worried.

And it’s not just the prospect of the obvious slightly awkward effects the stuff might have on those unknowingly mistaking it for regular pre-work java. Quite to the contrary, as when combined with certain commonly-used medications, the resulting effects on the respective individual’s blood pressure could potentially prove lethal. If all this wasn’t bad enough, the manufacturer of Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee is facing a serious ticking off for not even disclosing on the list of ingredients this potentially dangerous addition. Which in turn means that even if you’re careful enough to read the label, you’ll still have no real idea what you’re putting in your body.

Or the resulting effects to expect!

Of course it all comes across as rather tongue-in-cheek, but the FDA recently announced that it had come across no less than 300 different products touting ‘enhanced’ effects in a number of departments, which made no mention of the added ingredients pumped into them. All of which essentially adds up to one very specific and simple lesson; if you don’t know where your coffee came from or exactly what’s in it, you might be better off not bothering!
