Christmas Coffee

There are two major problems with the kinds of Christmas coffees you can pick up right now from the big chains we won’t be naming here. Along with being completely overpriced, there’s the fact that so many of them contain more calories than a double cheeseburger. Literally, they do!

Which is why the way we see it, you’re far better off getting hold of some epic-quality coffee and experimenting with your own concoctions at home. You’ll save money, you’ll keep the calories down and you’ll probably have a great time too. What’s more, replicating some of the UK’s favourite big-name Christmas coffees really isn’t all-that difficult either. Syrups, sprinkles, cream and the like, just head out for a few basics and you’ll have so much room for experimentation.

And just to get you started off on the right foot, here’s a quick overview of two Christmas coffee recipes you’re guaranteed to love:

The Ultimate Christmas Coffee

While it’s not 100% necessary to go ahead with the brandy, that’s definitely where much of the Christmas ‘spirit’ in this one comes from! To whip up a batch of your own to serve about eight people, you’ll be needing the following:

  • 175ml chilled whipping cream
  • 250ml freshly ground coffee
  • Tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp powdered sugar
  • Tsp ground cardamom
  • Tsp ground nutmeg
  • 40ml brandy
  • 1.5 litres of water 
  • Extra sugar to taste

Putting it all together couldn’t be easier. First up, whip the cream in a bowl until it is nice and thick. Add the brandy and powdered sugar, before continuing to beat until stiff. Take a coffee filter and add the coffee, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom and extra sugar to taste. Brew the coffee as weak or strong as you like. Divide the coffee into cups, before adding a good dollop of the cream mixture and maybe an extra dusting of nutmeg for decoration.

Gingerbread Latte

If you’re into gingerbread, chances are you won’t be able to get enough of this one. Once again, there’s the option of adding a dash or two of your chosen Christmas tipple, but it’s not necessary at all…so feel free to experiment. For the record, this is a per-serving recipe.

  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 tsp molasses
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp strong coffee
  • 1 cup milk
  • Sugar to taste

With this one, it’s as easy as putting everything together in a mug or small pot, before giving it all a good stir and heating to the desired temperature. Alternatively, heat and froth the milk separately, before adding to the heated coffee mixture for a thicker, richer texture. And of course, there’s always the option of a dollop of cream for the top, if you fancy it!
